Michael and Linda (Kaufman) Portnoy were his parents, and he was raised in Swampscott, Massachusetts, where he went to Swampscott High School. Todd McShay from ESPN was one of his classmates. David Portnoy is Jewish. In 1995, he enrolled into the University of Michigan, where he eventually earned a degree in education.
Portnoy has been detained twice in connection with NFL-related incidents: the first time was on May 12, 2015, when he was arrested by New York City police following a protest against Deflategate in which he and three Barstool employees handcuffed one another on the floor of NFL headquarters[14], and the second time was in 2019, when he was detained at Mercedes-Benz Stadium for a portion of Super Bowl LIII. In the latter occasion, he was prevented from entering the game because he had made fake passes to attend a press conference the day before.

David Portnoy’s Career
After graduating in 1999, Portnoy relocated to Boston and started working at Yankee Group, a company that conducts IT market research.
Portnoy departed the Yankee Group after four years in order to launch Barstool Sports. On January 7, 2016, The Chernin Group owned by Peter Chernin, acquired the majority of Barstool, and it was declared that the company’s headquarters would relocate to New York City. The founders of Barstool Sports sold a 36% share to Penn National Gaming in 2020 for $163 million, which included $135 million in cash and $28 million in Penn non-voting convertible preferred stock. The Chernin Group keeps a 36% ownership in the company after the sale, while Portnoy continues to administer the website and maintain creative control over the content.

After Thomas Menino’s retirement in 2013, Portnoy mounted an unsuccessful bid to succeed him as mayor of Boston.
